Frazil and Ice Controlled by Deicing

Frazil is a thin layer of ice that forms on the surface of water and it can accumulate on water intake grids and obstruct water flow intake. The frequent obstruction of water intake by frazil in winter can compromise the water supply of municipalities, cooling systems, nuclear power plants as well as the supply for fire departments.

In the presence of risk of formation of active frazil, two deicing technologies were used in combination at one of our customers in the field of hydroelectricity:

  • The Bubble Tubing® deicing system to raise warmer water from the bottom to the surface.
  • The installation of a propeller deicer in a strategic location to keep the water intake free of any ice or frazil.

Our client is very satisfied with the results obtained by these 2 combined systems.
