A First in Scotland! Bubble Curtain installed at Mowi using Bubble Tubing®
July 28, 2024
In early June 2024, the team at Mowi Scotland installed the first bubble curtain in Scotland using Bubble Tubing® technology.
The Mowi team successfully installed the complete system. We were there to support the team during a part of the install.
Why is Mowi Scotland using Bubble Tubing®?
Due to climate change, new challenges are being presented to farmers, whether on land or at sea. For salmon farmers specifically, it’s not the rise in sea temperatures itself that is the issue, but rather the tiny creatures that may flourish as a result.
During late summers in Scotland, farmers at Mowi have witnessed over the past decade to an increase in Harmful Algae Blooms (HABS) as well as a species of micro-jellyfish known as hydrozoans.
In high numbers, both algae (microscopic plankton) and micro-jellyfish can add stress to a salmon which can cause associated health issues and even death. This can be caused by either physical harm or toxicity to delicate fish gills, or by contributing to reduced oxygen levels near the surface where blooms tend to reside.
A bubble curtain with Bubble Tubing® technology can help mitigate the potential harm to salmon. The bubble curtain placed strategically around the cage or entire farm will create an upward current of colder, oxygenated water and effectively displace surface water carrying a high abundance of harmful species.
The bubble curtain is typically installed at a depth of between 20 and 40 metres depending on the size of the cages and oceanography at the farm location.
Our team here at Bubble Tubing® is proud to be working with salmon farming like Mowi, who looks to adapt to a changing environment and help protect the health and welfare of their livestock.
